I’m a dog so I don’t project or worry about future moments with one exception, I’m always hoping for that walk-by treat to fall my way…but I really do remember those moments that have changed my life as evidenced by my ceaseless, wagging tail.
The life cycle lesson, that is truly a big one…I lost some of my buddies this year, from around here and also at Best Friends. The reality is that I don’t have any magic words on that ending chapter except if you cared for one of us there are so many others in need of love. You’ve still got it in your heart…it’s just tucked away for now, but like the flower waiting for the warmth of the sun, your heart too, can and will, open. During our own cycle of life, how are we going to use this time?
Mom was like that flower, just shy of 4 years after her own best friend crossed over. What’s weird is that ray of sun came out at the exact same moment my email and picture did! Wow, what timing is that? She started loving me from the moment she saw that picture…I took her breath away. Then it happened again… an even brighter ray of sun fearlessly lit her soul right about the time she hit the “send” button on my adoption application. Her heart jumped and she ran in to tell dad, “I did it! I applied for Rhubarb! She kinda did the simultaneous laugh-cry thing when she told him and I swear on all four paws, my heart could hear her! It was awesome!
There truly is a purpose and a reason for everything; look at me…OMG, I have four, count them, F O U R useless legs! Two that don’t bend enough and two that are bent over! Hmmm, interesting the one’s that DON’T bend are much harder to deal with. Kind of like life…see what I mean!
Here’s a pre-Rhu fact that will show you just how determined destiny can be; Mom waited 4 years after the loss of her previous dog…even traveled to the other coast to look at some puppies. Dig this…she didn’t buy any pups because “their lineage showed there could be some hip dysplasia.” So lets see, why not adopt a special needs dog, oh wait, not just a special needs dog but a BIG, special needs dog, oh wait a BIG special needs dog, who can’t walk… at all!! Yeah I’d say destiny had something completely different in mind… We’re so glad.
Our paths in life may seem long sometimes or perhaps wrong sometimes, but travel them we must because eventually, we’ll all find our way back home… I know I did.
Coming from the world’s happiest rescue, let me wish all of you a wonderful, courageous, road less traveled, Rockin’ Rhu, New Year!
